In respect to this, is it Zoro or Zolo?
If you look on the misc section on Zoro's page on the wiki there's a large section on spellings/translations of his name. A lot of the time "Zolo" is used in English to avoid the copyright on "Zorro" due to both being swordsman.
Subsequently, question is, why is Luffy called Ruffy? But apparently Oda meant the name to be Luffy (can't find a source yet), and since the Japanese language cannot faithfully represent this name it became Rufi, being the closest match to the actual name.
